Mechanic's tool kit: what a car garage needs

A mechanic spends the day loosening, tightening and lifting. Well-chosen tools save time and save bolts from damage — here they are in buying order.

Last updated:

1. Loosening and tightening

  • A spanner set, a socket set with ratchet in 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 inch, a torque wrench, hex keys, pliers and screwdrivers.

2. Lifting

  • A hydraulic floor jack, a bottle jack, and jack stands — never work under a jack alone.

3. Speed

  • An impact wrench, and a compressor with air tools.

4. Greasing and testing

  • A grease gun, a multimeter, a battery charger and a work light.

FAQ

Which socket set size should I start with?
The 1/2 inch drive covers most car work (wheels, suspension, engine). Add 1/4 inch for small interior fasteners, and 3/8 inch in between if you do a lot.
Is a jack alone enough to work under a car?
No. A jack is for lifting only. Before going under the car, lower it onto jack stands on firm, level ground.
Cordless or air impact wrench?
Air is cheaper per tool and runs non-stop but needs a compressor and hoses. Cordless costs more but goes with you outside the garage. Many garages own both.
