Plumber's tool kit: the tools every plumber needs

Plumbing starts with measuring and ends with a leak test; between them come cutting, tightening, welding and drilling. This kit is ordered by the stages of the job, so you can see what your bag is missing.

Last updated:

1. Measuring and marking

  • A 5 or 8 m tape measure.
  • A spirit level for drain slope and fixtures; a laser level saves time over long runs.

2. Cutting

  • A pipe cutter for plastic and PPR — a clean straight cut is needed for a sound weld.
  • A hacksaw for metal pipe and tight spots.
  • A small angle grinder.

3. Tightening

  • A pipe wrench in at least two sizes.
  • An adjustable wrench for plated nuts and fittings.
  • Water-pump pliers.

4. Welding and sealing

  • A PPR socket fusion welder with dies for your pipe sizes.
  • PTFE tape and a caulking gun.

5. Drilling and fixing

  • A rotary hammer for walls and floors.
  • A cordless drill for fixtures.

6. Safety

Work gloves, safety glasses and a headlamp.

FAQ

What is the most important tool in a plumber's kit?
The pipe wrench: no metal pipe is tightened or loosened without it. Next come the pipe cutter and the PPR welder, since most installation today is plastic.
Which pipe wrench size should I buy?
For home work, 10 or 12 inch covers most fittings. For large pipe add 18 or 24 inch. Ideally own two: one holds, one turns.
Does a plumber need an angle grinder?
It is not the first purchase, but it saves a lot of time cutting metal and chasing walls. A small 115 or 125 mm grinder is enough.
