Best hand tools: what a workshop and a home need, and how to spot quality

Hand tools are bought once and kept for years — if they are good. The difference between a wrench that lasts and one that rounds off on the first bolt is the steel and how it was made. Here is how to tell before you try it.

The basic kit you cannot do without

  • A combination spanner set in the common sizes from 8 to 24 mm, plus an adjustable wrench.
  • Combination pliers, long-nose pliers for tight spots, and side cutters.
  • A screwdriver set, Phillips and slotted, plus a test pen.
  • A hammer of 300–500 g for general use.
  • A ratchet and socket set for cars and machinery.
  • A tape measure, a spirit level and a utility knife.

How to spot a good tool

  • The steel is marked on it: chrome vanadium (CR-V) for spanners and sockets, S2 or CR-V for screwdriver tips.
  • Jaws close with no gap, and the spanner grips the bolt with no play.
  • The handle is comfortable and does not slip with oil; electricians need insulated, voltage-rated handles.
  • Plating is even with no flaking.

A full set or piece by piece?

A set costs less than its pieces and comes in a case that keeps it in order — best for starting a workshop. A tradesman knows which pieces wear out fastest and buys the best of those separately.

FAQ

What does CR-V on a spanner mean?
Chrome vanadium: a hard steel alloy that takes torque without rounding off, used in good spanners and sockets.
What is the difference between an adjustable wrench and a pipe wrench?
An adjustable wrench has smooth jaws for nuts and bolts. A pipe wrench has toothed jaws that bite round pipe, and belongs in a plumber's kit.
Do you have wholesale prices for shops?
Yes. Shops, distributors and contractors get prices and discounts that grow with order size. Apply on the "Become a partner" page and the right desk will contact you.
