Carpenter's tool kit: from the tape measure to the router
Carpentry is accurate measuring, then clean cutting, then solid assembly. The kit below follows those three stages.
1. Measuring
- A 5 m tape, a square and a level.
2. Cutting
- A circular saw for straight cuts, a jigsaw for curves, a miter saw for angles and a hand saw.
3. Shaping and finishing
- A router, an electric planer, a sander and chisels.
4. Assembly
- A cordless drill, clamps in several sizes, a hammer and a staple gun.
FAQ
What is the difference between a circular saw and a jigsaw?
A circular saw makes fast straight cuts in boards and thick timber. A jigsaw is slower but cuts curves and openings inside a board. Most carpenters own both.
Do I need a router when starting a workshop?
Not at first. A saw, drill and sander cover most simple furniture. A router becomes necessary for profiled edges, grooves and concealed hinges.
